Day 1 Porto to Labruge +-24km’s
We woke up at 6am, opened the window to pea soup. It certainly did not look like a good day to start a Camino. Oh how things can change in a few hours.
Breakfast was not included at Grande Oceano Guesthouse. Nothing quite like starting the day with nuts and water.
We set off for the Cathedral at 7:30am for the obligatory photo. Our official starting point.
Here’s the pic.
I’m not one for always following rules and I had no desire to walk along the river to the coast in miserable weather. So we walked a combo of central and da costa until we landed up on Senda Litoral. (Beach)
We have Maps.me and Wise Pilgrim offline maps, no mistakes were made and we navigated perfectly through the city of Porto.
We found the Porto sign, felt like Amsterdam for a moment.
Slightly different look above the river.
Beautiful churches.
We arrived on the coast and the weather cleared.
At Matosinhos (Tragedy at Sea Monument)
A family walking in Matosinhos.
Boa Nova Lighthouse.
This part the Coastal is beautiful on the boardwalks.
Obelisco Da Memória marks the spot where King Pedro IV and 7500 men of his liberal army disembarked, marking the end of the absolutist regime had hitherto dominated Portugal. The liberation army advanced on Porto, keeping it under siege for a year.
Our menu for lunch. The second item was a type of meat ball wrapped in a cabbage leaf.
Rob about to enjoy his food at Praia da Memória.
Walk with your heart and embrace the Camino.
The old fishing village of Angeiras. There’s something special about this place. The fisherman are friendly wishes us well for our Camino journey.
Meeting the locals, they were only too happy to be in a photo with me.
Crossing over the river onda to get to Labruge.
We checked in at Casa da Praia Guesthouse at about 15:15. A lovely home with all the necessary facilities. Time to rest.
Dinner at Rubens down the road!
