Day 14 Pontecesures to Picaraña +-13km’s
It’s all about having time, we made the time.
We split the last day of the Camino into two days in order to enjoy a few hours in Padrón
We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at Casa Do Rio at 8am and started walking at 8:40am.
Pontecesures is not far from Padrón and we arrived as the town was opening for business. We spent about 2.5hrs touring around the town. The first stop was a coffee break as one does on the Camino.
A stroll over the bridge to the Convento do Carme was in order, we were hoping to get some pics of the town from the higher point. The weather was not great but fortunately the rain held off.
A visit to the Church of St James of Padrón is must do on the Camino. We received our Pilgrim stamp, took photos inside the church including the Pedrón. The Pedrón is the Roman Altar Stone, a very important jacobean tradition as it’s the place where the boat of the Apostle was moored. It’s at the bottom of the main altar of the church. The front part has a latin inscription, translated “To Neptune the Iria Forum with their money” Padrón dates back to the 10th century, it was the suburb of Iria Flavia, riding up by the river Sar.
In Padrón, you can obtain a Pedronía provided you have a stamp in your Pilgrim passport from the Church of St James of Padrón. It’s issued by the tourist office. The certificate commemorates the old Pilgrim route that started in Santiago when they used to visit Padrón to see the remains of the Apostle.
We stopped at Cafeteria Don Pepe II. Pepe presented us with Dr Zas, a local drink from Padrón. Who were we to say no and another stamp added in our Pilgrim passport, much to our delight.
The balance of the walk to Picaraña took us through medieval suburbs and along a few main roads.
We checked in at Pensión Pividal 16.5km’s from Santiago de Compostela.
